A transformer on a power pole caught fire yesterday, cutting electricity to about 14,000 people in the Belmont area. A Western Power spokeswoman said the incident was related to eccesive rain the day before.
“Water got into the transformer, which is called water egress,” she said.
“DFES (Department of Fire and Emergency Services) were able to put the fire out and power was restored by 7.15am.
“There is no one out now but there are still some lines down and some debris around.
A DFES spokeswoman said three fire trucks attended the fire, which started at 6.10am, and extinguished it at 6.50am.
