USA, New York: New York Power Authority (NYPA), U.S. largest state public power organization, has welcomed the arrival of the first of five new autotransformers slated for the Niagara Power Project’s switchyard in Lewiston, New York State.
The transformer was transported by rail from Canada to the Niagara Falls CSX rail yard, where it was then transferred to an 18-axle trailer for an approximately 3.5 kilometre journey to the Niagara switchyard.
Weighing in at more than 200 tons, the transformer procession stopped traffic as crews worked to lift power lines out of the way of the equipment during the day-long trip.
The new transformers are part of NYPA’s Transmission Life Extension and Modernization (TLEM) initiative, which extends to 2025.
This transformer is expected to be in service by early October.
