USA, Hawaii: Maui Electric Co. will begin construction of its Kuihelani Substation this month near the intersection of Kuihelani Highway and Maui Lani Parkway, on the second-largest of the Hawaiian islands.
This $13 million project, which will include power transformers and associated electrical equipment, is aimed at meeting a growing electricity demand from Central Maui homes, schools and businesses, reports The Maui News.
MECO says the project will also provide the utility with the capability of integrating more renewable energy resources into the island’s power grid through improved monitoring and communications equipment.
The new substation’s electrical lines will be buried underground and cross under Kuihelani Highway.
