Swedish energy company Vattenfall is planning to deploy high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line to connect its Norfolk Vanguard and Norfolk Boreas offshore wind farms to the UK’s National Grid.

The company has chosen HVDC transmission technology due to fewer losses of transmitted electricity and cost competitiveness – lower costs of onshore and offshore substations and associated equipment, reports CTBR.

Vattenfall’s Norfolk Vanguard is a 1.8 GW offshore wind farm that will be located about 47 km from the shore.

The company expects to receive a consent decision from the UK Government for the wind farm at the end of 2019
