USA, Indiana: A power transformer that tripped caught fire at an AEP substation near North Liberty in Indiana, sending heavy black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.
AEP decided the safest option was to let the transformer burn, since the fire was isolated to that area. Then the crews were able to shut down power to that transformer so firefighters could step in and extinguish the fire.
One transformer has been removed from service and the rest of the substation is now operating as usual, reports South Bend Tribune.
No customers were affected by the fire and no injuries were reported.
