New Zealand: ABB has received an order from Transpower New Zealand Ltd to upgrade its high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link which interconnects the transmission grids of the North and South islands.

The company’s latest technology control system will be a key component of the upgrade, according to the press statement from ABB.

The more than 600 km long North-South HVDC interconnection link is a vital element of New Zealands’s transmission system and is used as an energy-balancing system between the two islands.

The link was initially commissioned in 1965 as one of the first HVDC transmission systems in the world. The first installation was decommissioned in 2012 after 47 years in operation.

This upgrade is scheduled to be finalized in 2020
