Chennai, India: Power supply will soon be of enhanced quality in Chennai, with chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami commissioning new substations of various capacities via video conference on Saturday.
The 17 new substations will also improve power supply quality in the districts.
Substations in urban areas are gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) based.
“The GIS substation needs low maintenance since the active parts are protected from exposure to atmospheric air, moisture, contamination and is more reliable. The substation is designed to blend in with the surroundings.” a senior Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) official said.
Tangedco has committed to bringing about operational efficiency through compulsory feeder and distribution transformer metering, consumer indexing and GIS mapping of losses, the upgrading transformers and smart metering.
New substations were commissioned in Virudhunagar, Karur, Vellore and Dharmapuri districts too.
