USA, Wisconsin: Workers moved a 176 tonne transformer, destined for the Briggs Road substation in Holmen, using a Goldhofer 14-axle self-propelled hydraulic deck trailer.
The trailer was made in Germany and there are only a few of these in each state, according to Jeff Schmidt, operator of Vic’s Crane and Heavy Haul.
The Goldhofer has 112 tie-rodded wheels with hydraulics on each end for independent steering and height adjustment. This allows the trailer to make 90 degree turns with relative ease and remain level over uneven terrain. Each one has a capacity of more than 454 tonnes.
The transformer was manufactured by Hyosung Corp. in South Korea and was shipped by boat to the port of Houston, Texas. Then it was transported by rail to Onalaska. The Briggs Road substation in Holmen is one of six substations on the CapX2020 Hampton-Rochester-La Crosse project.
