There are a lot of new technical challenges to be addressed by industry experts, including 1200 kV AC or 1100 kV DC transmission lines and intelligent smart/micro grids which are being discussed for medium and low voltage distribution systems.
Also, integration of renewables requires re-wiring of the traditional transmission and distribution grids. Switchable high voltage DC grids will be installed soon, and the former traditional consumers of electrical energy will now also become producers of energy.
These and hundreds of more questions lay before high voltage engineers waiting to be addressed.
During the event, South African academics and researchers attending the symposium paid a courtesy visit to the ETD transformer factory in Pilsen, the company which co-sponsored event.
